A Chiropodist versus a Podiatrist - a definition

A common question that we’re asked at Masucci Podiatry is what is the definition between podiatry and chiropody?

The simple answer is that the word chiropody has been declining over the last 10 years in favour of the word podiatry. Podiatry is now the recognised professional term in the medical world and with consumers and clients in the UK and abroad.

For people that ask us, we explain the new modern word and say that a chiropodist will help with day-to-day and common foot problems. Podiatry reflects an increasing scope of practice and, whilst podiatrists will deal with common foot problems, they may also be qualified to treat more serious and persistent problems.

A podiatrist is often referred to as a foot doctor because surgical procedures are performed in a hospital theatre by a Consultant Podiatrist, such as Mr Masucci.

The professional body for chiropodists and podiatrists is the College of Podiatry. Mr Masucci is a Fellow of the College of Podiatry (Surgical Faculty).
